Ganderbal, Feb 05 (KNO): Sonamarg in central Kashmir's Ganderbal district has emerged as a tourist hotspot, drawing 1,575,579 visitors from 2021 to 2023.
At an altitude of 2730 meters, the picturesque 'Meadow of Gold' captivates with snow-clad mountains against a vibrant blue sky.
An official told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that 11,375 foreigners visited for the first time in the last three years, contributing to the surge in tourism.
From January 2021 to December 2023, there was a substantial increase in tourists, totalling 1,575,579 (1,306,902 local and 11,375 foreigners), he said.
Notable attractions like Gagangheer, Sonmarg, Fish Point, Thajwas, Zero-Point, and the last village Sarbal experienced fresh snowfall, attracting enthusiasts.
"This influx has significantly benefited local businesses and hospitality services, witnessing heightened demand for accommodations, guided tours, and authentic local experiences. The economic impact is evident, marking a substantial boost in Sonamarg's tourism sector," the official said.
After the fresh snowfall, visitors such as Sheetal from Gujarat expressed delight and praised the kindness of the people of Kashmir. This is the reason for my annual visit to Kashmir," she said.
Sumit, another visitor, recommended exploring Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Doodhpathri.
The District Administration of Ganderbal is organising the 8th National SnowShoe Championship in Sonamarg from Feb 17 to 20, showcasing thrilling activities to attract more tourists to the region.
